During this workshop you create a simple but unique 9 part piece, lined patchwork tote bag – charming in aesthetic, and practical for everyday use. We will use fabric scraps to create a 100% upcycled piece. It’s a great way to learn the basics on the sewing machine, so you can learn to stitch angles, make straps and lining. Material scraps and embellishments will be provided, but if you have left-overs yourself that you want to use, feel free to bring them as well! Or what if you would bring old clothes, form yourself or a loved-one?
Kathryn Tonk spent 2019 building TONKS Recycled Textiles from her studio in Amsterdam Noord, with the intention to create a platform that showcases the possibilities with up-cycling what we already have. The materials used are mostly from household origin (i.e curtains, tablecloths, tea towels) and embellished by the eccentricities found at flea markets. Since this year she is also hosting workshops at De Steek, with her own signature, and by using unconventional, second hand fabrics.
